Supergirl is in theaters this summer. The movie is based on a comic Tom King wrote called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. A space western about Supergirl, a dying alien girl, and revenge.

Before he wrote comics, Tom King was a counterterrorism officer at the CIA. After he left, he wrote 85 issues of Batman. His Vision comic is what WandaVision was built from. He lives in DC.

If you've ever wondered what changes when a comic becomes a movie, what stays, what gets cut, what the writer fights for, ask the person who watched it happen to his own book.

If you fill notebooks with characters nobody else has seen, this is for you. If you've been watching the movies and you want to find the comics they came from, this is for you. If you already post your own work online and you want to talk to people who do this for a living, this is for you.

COMICTROPOLIS is a series of conversations at DC Public Library locations featuring David Betancourt (The Athletic/New York Times), a former culture reporter at The Washington Post and writer for Marvel Entertainment and various guest stars from the comic book industry.

This series will be aimed at Washington’s vibrant comic book reading community and led by a native Washingtonian (Betancourt) who still lives in DC and grew up frequenting Big Planet Comics (DC’s DMV chain of comic bookstores) in Georgetown and on U Street NW. Betancourt remains an avid fan and believer in the power of comic books and their impact on society.

The series will be an insider look into the world of writing comics from both Betancourt and guests and what it is like for all the creatives featured to work with some of the most popular brands in pop culture. They will also discuss what it means to go from the worlds of Marvel and DC Comics to creating their own creator-owned comic book brands.
